Safety and Security Guidance

UK Legislation for Cartridges

  • Buying Cartridges: You must hold a valid Shotgun or Firearm Certificate issued by your local police authority.
  • Possession: Having cartridges without a certificate is not always an offence, but supplying or selling them without checks is illegal.
  • Storage Laws: Governed by the Explosives Regulations 2014. Up to 10,000 cartridges may be stored securely without an additional licence.
  • Lead Shot Phase-Out: Restrictions expected from 2026. Stay updated with BASC guidance.

Online Safety for Cartridge Buyers

  • ✅ Buy only from verified gunrooms and licensed retailers.
  • ✅ Always request and confirm the seller’s official dealer/licensing number.
  • ⚠️ Be wary of offers that seem “too good to be true”.
  • ⚠️ Never share your shotgun certificate or ID with unverified sources.

Safe Storage & Transport

  • ✅ Store cartridges in a locked, dry, cool place, separate from firearms.
  • ✅ Keep away from solvents, petrol, or other flammables.
  • ✅ Transport in original packaging and keep out of sight.
  • ⚠️ You can normally carry cartridges for personal sporting use without special paperwork. Businesses or large quantities must follow stricter transport rules. GOV.UK: Private Carriage Guidance

Fraud Awareness

  • ✅ Always insist on official receipts and check the seller’s licensing details.
  • ✅ Report suspicious activity to Action Fraud or your local police.
  • ⚠️ Be cautious of requests for upfront payments without proof of credentials.
  • ⚠️ Avoid social media–only cartridge deals or unverifiable sellers.
